Cuff: The cuff is a balloon at the end of the tube that is inflated to create a seal between the tube and the trachea. This prevents air from leaking around the tube and helps to keep the lungs inflated.
Murphy eye: A small hole in the side of the cuff that allows air to escape if the cuff is overinflated.
Pilot balloon: A small tube that connects to the cuff. This allows air to be inflated into the cuff.
Sterilization indicator: A chemical strip that changes color when the tube has been sterilized.
Radio opaque stripe: A stripe on the tube that makes it visible on X rays.
Size: The size of the tube is measured in millimeters and is determined by the patient's age and size.
Shape: The standard ETT is a straight tube, but there are also curved tubes available. Curved tubes are used in patients with difficult airways.
